A gallery of fine art by equine, fantasy, western and wildlife artist, Kerry Nelson, including original oil paintings, current and past artwork, projects, and, news!
Just started this one yesterday. It is 9x12 and will be in color, but, I am sketching it in with black and white to start out. When I do these kinds of montages, I work them out as I go, so, there can be a lot of changes and adjustments along the way. I do not work with any reference materials at this point. It is just 'made-up' images...whatever I think might work in the composition. Later, when it gets down to the nitty-gritty, I'll pull out the anatomy books and ref. photos to improve the details and conformation of my horses. New updates to this work in progress will be added to the end of this same entry. You can click on these photos to see larger views.
These two are new in the book. Those thunder-legs just kept growing and growing...sometimes these sketches are a real battle, and, I don't always win...note the erasure marks, ha!
This is the second of two 'opposites' - one black, one white, arabian stallions in traditional styled head gear. This is Ivory, an original art trading card, ACEO (art cards, editions & originals) oil on multimedia art board. This image is shown near life-sized. For close-up images, just click the title!

This is my second take at this image. The photo is by AinslieG and was presented to the horse artists on WetCanvas as a challenge to be re-created to the artists whims. I already did this as a pen sketch in my sketchbook, but, thought it would be neat to do in oils too. So, this is it! It is 5"x5" on birch. Check out the ebay listing here;
This lovely arabian mare runs with her new foal, enjoying the perfect sunny Spring weather! This is an original 5x7 oil painting on hand-prepared hardboard panel.

This sketch is done from a photograph by AinsleyG from Arabian Horse Art Challenge 2 on the WetCanvas Equine Art forum. I decided to try it out in ink - something I have not done in well over a year! It was done without using any pencil to layout the sketch, a bit nerve-wracking since I do like my erasers! Overall I was pleased with how it came out and plan to do some more sketches using ink.
I just finished this one today, another arabian horse! It will go up for auction on ebay at noon cst. for a 3 day listing. This is an oil ACEO on birch, 2.5"x3.5". This is shown life-sized and a close-up.
This is a new ACEO oil painting of a pure white, arabian I call Silver. This little painting ended up being repainted 3 times because each time I thought it was finished, I found something to fix! I am happy with him now, but, I had moments when I thought he wouldn't make it and would have to be 'put down'!
